After researching a radio for months I finally decided on this one and am very glad I did. It has everything I was looking for and works perfectly. I was very interested in its ability to play videos for my two kids in the back. It works great. As this is my first aftermarket stereo in quite a few years I was pleasantly surprised with it. I read the other reviews that said it is a bit slow at loading movies and songs through the USB cable but I have not found it to be abnormally slow. For those that are interested I am using a 500gb WD passport (its a portable hard drive). The radio did not initially recognize the hard drive and I kept getting an error that it couldnt read that type of device or something. After a bit of research I realized that the hard drive was in the wrong format. Again, for those interested your USB mass storage devices need to be in a FAT format, NOT NTFS!!! So I partitioned my portable hard drive into FAT32 format and gave it 30gigs - loaded a bunch of .avi full length movies (which work perfectly), and a bunch of music. All work great. I plug it in and it only takes a few seconds for the JVC to recognize it and show everything on there. After I select a song it starts playing almost immediately, the videos take an extra couple of seconds but nothing unusual. As far as the foldering system works - On my portable hard drive I made one folder named Movies and another folder named Music. Within the Movies folder I put all my movies. Within the Music folder I have a separate folder for each artist and within each of those artsits' folders I have multiple songs for that artist. When the list comes up on the radio with everything that is on the hard drive I get a folder named Movies and all the other folders of the individual artists. In a nutshell the JVC will only display the lowest folder - it will not display parent folders of folders (I hope that makes sense to you).
I have not tried the SD card yet because I see no need for it so I cant comment on it.
The video out is great. I have a splitter and installed two 7" pyle LCD screens in the headrests for my kids to watch. They love it.
Contrary to what some online sites said, the AVX810 DOES have a separate rear view camera video input.
As far as the parking brake bypass for video goes. I watched the youtube video online on how to bypass it and it worked perfectly. All you have to do is take the green (light green-ish) wire coming out of the back of the radio and connect it to ground (if you dont know what that means then you shouldnt be installing the radio by yourself anyway).
Installation was a breeze. It fits almost perfect into my 2000 4runner - I didnt need any kind of dash kit, just the wiring kit. I did however have to slightly sand down/grind down a very small portion of the plastic from the car that goes around the faceplate because it all so slightly would rub on the plastic surround when opening and closing (not a big deal).
Tuner works great, interface is nice, I really like being able to choose between like 10 different colors and 5 different themes. I would have liked to be able to upload my own pictures for the background, but thats ok because it would probably be difficult to see the text on the screen.
Controller works fine, but who actually uses that, maybe the kids from the back when they get older.
This deck is also perfect if you have an aftermarket system in your car due to the equalizer, crossover and preamp outputs and subwoofer level.
Sound is great, video is great for a 7" screen. It is not an HD screen so dont try to compare it to your 40" 1080p Sony LCD playing a bluray - just dont go there, video is great.
I only have one complaint and it is more of a physical limitation due to the design of the radio and the car. I have a 2000 4runner, automatic with 4WD. The automatic shifter is in between the driver and passenger seat and with it in P (park, which is all the way forward towards the radio) there is not enough room for the video screen to slide down to 1) detach the screen, or 2) put in a disk.
Overall this is the best radio I have ever owned. I paid about $375 for it (10/2009) and it is worth every penny. Sound, video, interface, options, everything is what is should be. |
I love this thing(pause)
